Captain’s Log 2022

Published February 11, 2023

A big thank you to Tom Andy Pop, Chris A for organising fixtures and sorting out player availability – without that, be difficult to have any fixtures. A big thank you to all who made themselves available to play, and indeed did play – every 1 of you made a difference We need a major recruitment drive to get new players in … there must be a wealth of undiscovered talent within the BBC. Worked with a selection committee of Chris Ancil and Harry Low, and I thank them for their input, which was any time from a Wednesday evening […]

Captain’s Log 2021

Winter sun To say this year was a terrible summer would be unfair because I fondly remember a scorching Sunday in June at Epping, where we watched Harry and Naman put on a remarkable partnership. More about that later. Overall though, 2021 was not a summer to ‘write home about’. So, you find me catching some winter sun in Lanzarote and using my dodgy memory and all available online resources to recall our season. I can’t go another year without tea! Normal, what is now normal. Well we were almost back to ‘normal’ this season. A full set of fixtures […]

An appreciation of Mark Dodd by William Crawley

Published December 24, 2020

Mark Dodd, former Controller Overseas Services (1981-88) and Head of Eastern Service (1967-81), died on 29 November 2020 aged 90. Mark graduated from Cambridge in History and worked as an archaeologist for the Royal Commission on Dorset before joining the BBC as a general trainee in 1956. Captain’s Log 2020

Bennett Maxwell

Published April 1, 2020

Bushmen will be saddened to hear that former Chairman Bennett Maxwell died this morning, aged 85. Michael Kaye writes: We have lost a brilliant, gentle, positive force for good with the passing of Bennett Maxwell.  In his quiet way Bennett infused his life with joyful enthusiasm.  If on first meeting he seemed to be an unassuming presence, his conversation soon corrected that misapprehension. Bennett was the most skilful anecdotalist I have ever known. Whether serious, humorous, flippant or curious, Bennett could hold interlocutors enthralled. One thread of his memory concerned his family. He could trace his ancestors back to 16th century Prague. But the man Bennett most admired was his doctor- father. […]
